Renewables, CBG and biogas

India needs more compressed biogas plant than it currently has the design capacity to deliver. That is the gap our Plant 3D practice was built to serve.

The market position

India's Compressed Biogas Blending Obligation makes biogas offtake mandatory rather than voluntary: 1% of CNG and PNG consumption from FY 2025-26, stepping to 3%, then 4%, and 5% from FY 2028-29 onwards. The first mandatory year closed above target — evidence that the demand side of this market is real, not aspirational.

Government projections attached to the mandate anticipate on the order of 750 CBG projects by FY 2028-29. Against that, the number of commissioned plants remains far below target while active letters of intent run into four figures.

The constraint is not demand or capital. It is execution capacity — and specifically the engineering capacity to take a plant from process basis to fabrication drawings without the rework that delays commissioning.

Our reference engagement. IDAC delivered EPC support for a 10 TPD compressed biogas plant through a project-based ODC, covering structural and mechanical design as an extension of the client's engineering function.

Where the engineering is genuinely difficult

Digester mixing

Wide, shallow digester geometry makes mixing harder than vessel intuition suggests. Dead zones reduce gas yield invisibly — the plant simply underperforms without an obvious fault. CFD answers this before the impellers are bought.

Gas conditioning train

Scrubbing, drying and upgrading equipment with tight pressure-drop budgets across the train. Getting the hydraulics wrong at design stage shows up as a compressor that cannot make rate.

Plant layout and constructability

CBG plants are frequently built on constrained rural sites by contractors without heavy plant design experience. A layout that is buildable with the equipment actually available matters more than one that is theoretically optimal.

Storage and handling

Feedstock handling, digestate storage and gas storage — including the structural assessment of large-diameter tanks on variable ground.

How we work on CBG projects

Most CBG developers are not engineering organisations. They are project developers with a feedstock arrangement, a site and an offtake agreement, who need an engineering function rather than a series of discrete analysis packages.

That is a poor fit for buying studies one at a time and a good fit for a design team that carries the project through. It is why the majority of our CBG work runs through the ODC model rather than as scoped packages.
