Dr Kiran Bhagate

Director and Technical Head

Dr Bhagate directs IDAC's engineering practice and personally reviews work carrying certification or safety consequence.

His doctorate, from the University of Leeds, is in computational mechanics — the mathematics underlying the simulation software most engineers use as a black box. His research covered design sensitivity analysis and optimisation of composite laminates, including development of finite element code in C.

He is a Chartered Engineer with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, United Kingdom, and serves as a Professional Simulation Engineer Assessor for NAFEMS — the international association for engineering modelling, analysis and simulation. NAFEMS appoints a small number of assessors to judge whether other engineers' simulation competence meets the international standard; each application is reviewed by two independent assessors, and the scheme is audited by the Engineering Council.

He has delivered over 400 hours of industrial training in finite element analysis and explicit dynamics in the United Kingdom, and has developed customised finite element courses for both industrial engineers and university students.

Technical record

Research and practice areas span linear and non-linear structural mechanics; structural dynamics including modal, harmonic, response spectrum and full transient analysis; fatigue assessment; explicit dynamics; and computational fluid dynamics.

His project record from 2008 covers offshore platform substructures, FPSO turret and mooring systems, subsea connectors, pressure vessels, nuclear components, wind turbine towers, aerospace vibration assessment, and process and infrastructure structures — across the United Kingdom, Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, East Asia and India.
